Unsurprisingly, Hoshoryu (Tatsunami stable) has confirmed his participation in the winter tournament, following in the footsteps of Wakatakakage (see my article here).

After ten days of intensive training at various stables (Sakaigawa, Takasago, Oitekaze and Takekuma), the Grand Champion believes that both his knee and his mental strength are back to their best. The pressure is at its peak over the next fortnight: the JSA and the YDC Committee expect him to deliver a performance worthy of a true yokozuna.

As for the other wrestlers, their preparations are drawing to a close ahead of the start of the competition this Sunday, 8 November. Fujinokawa (photo, Isenoumi stable) is fine-tuning his technique: during a final training session at Sadogatake-beya, he won 9–5 in 14 bouts against his former Saitama High School teammates, Kotozakura and Kotoeiho, thanks to increasingly powerful low attacks. For this Fukuoka tournament, the sekiwake aims to match or even surpass his 11-4 record achieved in Tokyo last September in order to move closer to the rank ofozeki.
