The Japan Sumo Association (JSA) has just unveiled the long-awaited ranking charts for the November tournament! Between the promotions of wrestlers in sight and the unexpected falls of some favorites, let's take a look at the highlights of this new banzuke.
-
San'yaku (top of the elite): some major changes...
The two ozeki Aonishiki and Kirishima reversed their positions, as did both sekiwake Fujinokawa and Atamifuji.
Churanoumi becomes a komusubi for the first time in his career, while Yoshinofuji made a "meteoric" return to the top of the table after only two months of absence.
-
Maegashira ("pack" of the elite): remarkable climbs and spectacular falls
Splendid career peaks for the duo of the Fujishima stable (Fujiryoga and Fujiseiun), as well as for Toshinofuji and Asasuiryu.
Congratulations to Dewanoryu (photo), Arashifuji and Kyokukaiyu for their historic promotion to the first division, joined by the veteran Tamawashi, Kitanowaka and Daiseizan.
We note the brutal fall of Hakunofuji and the two brothers of the Sadogatake stable (Kotoshoho and Kotoeiho).
-
Juryo (second league): a wave of demotions punctuated by great promotions
To rebalance the ranks, six wrestlers were demoted to Juryo... In addition to the injury absences of Wakatakakage and Wakanosho during the autumn tournament, it is with a heavy heart that Shodai returns to the second division eleven years after his last journey! He is accompanied by Tobizaru, Chiyoshoma and Shonannoumi.
Fortunately, the next generation is glowing: Kazekeno and Tanji reach the best rank of their careers. Congratulations also to Asahifuji and Ryuho for their sekitori promotion. They wedge the fall of Nishikigi and Tochitaikai in Makushita.

An update on the crowd favourites in the lower divisions
On the prospects side: Mita (Futagoyama stable) slowly climbs the charts to reach the ninth place in Makushita, Omori (Oitekaze) jumps 7 places and our British hope Eisei (Minato) makes his Jonidan debuts (No. 83).
Despite a disappointing 1-6 record in September, veteran Moriurara (39, Otake stable) is "doing well" by dropping only one place to Jonokuchi 15.
See you on Sunday, November 8 for the kick-off of the competition!
