Avant-propos
Foreword
Whilst the withdrawal of Wakatakakage had been confirmed since his thigh injury in early July, uncertainty hung over the yokozuna Hoshoryu, who underwent knee surgery in August. The real surprise came from Maegashira 16 Wakanosho, who was also ruled out due to knee problems. From then on, all eyes turned to the other yokozuna, Onosato, as well as to the ozeki Kirishima. Meanwhile, sekiwake Atamifuji remained under close scrutiny in his quest to secure the next rank up.

**********
Although no wrestler managed a perfect start (5-0), the ozeki Kotozakura was a pleasant surprise with the quality of his sumo.
Another highlight was Takayasu’s victory on the fourth day against Onosato, which secured the tournament’s only kinboshi (a Maegashira’s victory over a Yokozuna).
Deuxième acte : les jours 6 à 10
Second act: days 6 to 10

**********
In the top division (Makuuchi), Onosato and Kinbozan are the only wrestlers to have come through this period without suffering a single defeat.
In the Juryo division, Tamawashi finally got back on track, beginning a comeback that saw him finish with a very solid record of 10-5.

Troisième acte : les jours 11 à 15
Third act: days 11 to 15

**********
The battle for the Emperor’s Cup has intensified as the competition enters its final stages.
Despite the successive withdrawals of Kotoshoho and then Takanosho, Yoshinofuji put together an impressive run of five consecutive victories (for a final record of 9-6).
After a dip in form (3-2) over the last few days, Onosato had his supporters worried, but the yokozuna managed to pull himself together on the final day against Aonishiki to clinch the sixth title of his career.
