Following his visit to the Sakaigawa stable yesterday, yokozuna Hoshoryu continued his tour on Friday with a visit to Takasago, which is based in temporary premises just a five-minute walk from the Kokusai Centre.

He mainly trained there with Asahakuryu, comfortably dominating their head-to-head record with 12 wins to 3 defeats (photo). Despite getting off to a good start in his few victories, Asa-H lacked stamina.

Although both were born in Mongolia (just five months apart) and arrived in Japan in 2015, they have never faced each other in an official tournament — as Asahakuryu made his debut in 2023, by which time Hoshoryu was already established in san’yaku. These training sessions and regional tours are therefore their only opportunity to test their skills against one another.

Whilst the Grand Champion will wait until next Friday (the 6th) to confirm his participation in the November tournament, Asahakuryu is not setting himself any specific targets, but hopes to maintain the positive momentum he built up in September.
