Whilst several of his stablemates were enjoying a bowl of chanko at a nearby temple, Churanoumi remained at the Kise stable’s training ground in Kiyama, half an hour from Fukuoka.

Alongside Kinbozan (photo), Kazuma and other teammates, the new sekiwake returned to training this week after a slower-paced October due to the tour. He is now focusing on fine-tuning his favourite technique, oshidashi, in order to shine once again at the upcoming winter tournament.

A source of pride for his native Okinawa prefecture, the wrestler also commands the admiration of his oyakata, who is impressed by his unwavering dedication. The coach, however, tempers his enthusiasm with kindness:

Don’t push yourself too hard and stick to your own pace. There’s no point in rushing things if it means you’ll collapse before the finish line.
