L'Association japonaise de sumo s’apprête à officialiser l'organisation d'une tournée exceptionnelle à Bangkok en juin prochain, sous réserve de la validation imminente par son conseil d'administration.

Cet événement s'inscrira dans la lignée des récentes démonstrations internationales organisées à Londres (octobre 2025) et Paris (juin 2026, cf. mon résumé sur ce lien). Il s'agira de la première tournée asiatique de la discipline depuis Jakarta, Indonésie en 2013. L'événement célébrera également un symbole fort : le cent-quarantième anniversaire des relations diplomatiques entre le Japon et la Thaïlande.

Face à l'engouement suscité par les étapes européennes, plusieurs destinations internationales étaient sur les rangs pour 2027, notamment Los Angeles et des villes australiennes. C'est finalement la capitale thaïlandaise qui a été privilégiée pour la deuxième semaine de juin. Les lutteurs s'y rendront selon l'organisation habituelle, scindés en deux groupes. Une délégation doit se rendre sur place très prochainement afin de lancer la promotion et tenir une conférence de presse. Parmi eux, le lutteur Shoryu (écurie Otowayama), de nationalité thaïlandaise par sa mère et ayant grandi sur place, souligne l'enjeu culturel de cette tournée :

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

The Japan Sumo Association is set to officially announce the organisation of a special tour in Bangkok next June, subject to imminent approval by the board of directors.

This event will follow on from the recent international demonstrations held in London (October 2025) and Paris (June 2026, see my summary via this link). It will be the sport’s first Asian tour since Jakarta, Indonesia in 2013. The event will also mark a significant milestone: the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Thailand.

Given the enthusiasm generated by the European stages, several international destinations were in the running for 2027, notably Los Angeles and a number of Australian cities. In the end, the Thai capital was chosen to host the event during the second week of June. The wrestlers will travel there as usual, split into two groups. A delegation is due to visit the venue very soon to launch the promotional campaign and hold a press conference. Among them is the wrestler Shoryu (Otowayama stable), of Thai nationality through his mother and grew up there, and who highlights the cultural significance of this tour:
