Meisei and Nishikigi under pressure ahead of the winter tournament (kyushu basho)

This Saturday, Meisei (photo 1, Tatsunami stable) made his final preparations ahead of the winter tournament.

Demoted to the Juryo (second) division since New Year 2026, he has been unable to turn things round in recent months and remains in second-last place (13th).

I want to give it my all to have a good fortnight and get 2027 off to a good start. The main aim is to avoid relegation, which would mean losing my sekitori status…

Conversely, Nishikigi (photo 2, Isenoumi stable) is hoping to regain the precious position he has only just lost. Having been demoted to Makushita (third division), the former komusubi intends to “seize this opportunity” to regain his trust, but above all to avoid slipping further down the table, just like many former opponents before him.
