Archives: let’s go back in time to January 1986 (Hatsu Basho)!

This month, the Association takes us back into their archives with the January 1986 tournament, which took place a few weeks after Chiyonofuji’s 14th title.

This fortnight marks a historic turning point with the retirement of the 59th yokozuna, Takanosato, amongst 27 rikishi. In terms of promotions, the tournament celebrated the san’yaku debut of Asahifuji (sekiwake) and Kitao (ozeki), who would later take the name Futahaguro. Above, the video from the first day opens with a speech by Chairman Kasugano (the former 44th grand champion Tochinishiki) and features some dohyo-iri ceremonies, specially adapted to mark the exceptional presence of Emperor Hirohito in the crowd.

On the program: 19 Makuuchi bouts, 3 Juryo, as well as a Jonokuchi match featuring the Canadian John Tenta, alias Kototenzan [better known as Earthquake in the world of professional wrestling, the WWF/WWE]. Among the highlights not to be missed are:

  • the performances of Fujinokawa (21:31), Kirishima (25:01) and Terao (26:31)

  • the 37th head-to-head between two future yokozuna, Asahifuji and Onokuni (34:48)

  • the performance of Hoshi (future Hokutoumi) against Takanosato (36:53)

In the final bout, Chiyonofuji defeated the Hawaiian "monster" Konishiki (38:24).
