The Japanese press reported this week that Takahashi Shojiro died at the age of 98.

Whilst little is known about his career as a sumo wrestler — which began in 1945 with the first Isegahama stable, then led by the 38th yokozuna Terukuni — his role in discovering young talents is far more significant.

When he retired in 1956, he became a coach at the Asaka Rensei Dojoin Saitama Prefecture, where, amongst other things, he trained the current Maegashira 4 Daieisho (photo taken in Paris in June 2026) in the early 2000s.

Deeply moved by his passing, D. sent his condolences to the family, paying tribute to Shojiro by revealing that he had been his very first training partner and a mentor to whom he owes a great deal.
