Kirishima is continuing to improve ahead of the Autumn tournament (aki basho)

With four days to go until the Autumn Tournament at the Kokugikan, Kirishima (photo, full-face) impressed on Wednesday during the Tokitsukaze faction’s training session.
In his quest for promotion to the highest rank of yokozuna, he dominated today's event with 19 wins and 2 losses. Sharp at the tachi-ai (initial clash) and composed in the ring, the ozeki easily neutralised the new sekiwake Fujinokawa and the komusubi Daieisho.
His stablemaster Otowayama (former yokozuna Kakuryu) emphasises that the mental aspect will be key to winning the top title. Meanwhile, his training partners are feeling the strain but gaining valuable experience: “I was completely outclassed”, admitted Fujinokawa, whilst Daieisho (23 bouts in total) was pleased with the demanding physical test despite his fatigue. Also worth noting was the participation in this morning’s session of the two new sekitori, Tanji and Tokifudo.
