Present at the Kokugikan for the 83rd National Tournament, the yokozuna Hoshoryu spoke about his imminent return to the autumn tour.

Having missed the last autumn tournament due to an operation on his right knee this summer, the wrestler from the Tatsunami stable is making his return contingent on the results of his medical check-up. If he receives the all-clear from the doctors, he plans to join the touring squad from Saturday 10th in Matsumoto.

Although he limited himself on Monday to performing two dohyo-iri ceremonies without fighting (the second of which was at Meiji Shrine), Hoshoryu said he felt relieved and reassured by his physical condition as he continues his rehabilitation ahead of the Kyushu tournament.

On the sporting front, today’s competition was won by Wakamotoharu, who celebrated his birthday by defeating Ura in the final, having notably knocked out the yokozuna Onosato in the second round.

Honoured to have his name added to the roll of honour of a historic tournament alongside legends such as Futabayama — the mentor of his own grandfather, Wakabayama — the wrestler from the Arashio stable provided a comical moment during the official photo shoot by snatching the champion’s armband from his arm at the very last moment 🤣. Full of ambition for the future, Wakamotoharu is approaching the new year determined to perform his best sumo.
