With the Autumn tournament due to take place this Sunday 13th at the Kokugikan, uncertainty still surrounds the participation of the yokozuna Hoshoryu (aged 27, Tatsunami stable).

On Tuesday 8th, the Mongolian wrestler nevertheless trained on the tachi-ai without his right knee brace, a month and a half after his knee operation, as seen on the stable’s Instagram stories. He said he was regaining his strength and would only wear his knee brace during sessions involving strong physical contact.

His recovery did, however, suffer a slight setback: on Friday 4th, during the training session supervised by the Commission, he got a little too carried away with butsukari against the sekiwake Atamifuji. Having suffered a muscle contusion the following day, he was forced to sit out the next session, admitting himself that he had not exercised sufficient restraint.

Despite a mediocre performance at the Nagoya tournament (7-7-1), Hoshoryu showed great enthusiasm today by advising his stablemate Meisei (Juryo 13 East) on his footwork. A final decision on his participation in the tournament will be made by the morning of Friday 11th, just before the announcement of the first bouts (torikumi).
