On Tuesday, Hoshoryu (foreground) welcomed Hiradoumi (Sakaigawa stable) at the Tatsunami stable’s temporary ground for a gruelling session of 28 bouts, which ended with a score of 20–8 in favour of the yokozuna.

In the wake of an initial marathon of 34 bouts at Sakaigawa-beya, the two wrestlers have thus racked up 62 bouts in 48 hours.

Throughout these meetings, the Grand champion has refined his style. Diligent in following President Hakkaku’s advice, he aims for maximum effectiveness whilst managing the condition of his knee, which is recovering well.

The Association will announce whether he will be taking part in the winter tournament this Friday, November 6, when the draw for the first bouts takes place.

For his part, Onosato travelled to Kumamoto Prefecture to perform a dohyo-iri in solemn memory of the victims of this summer’s earthquake. Accompanied by his assistants Takayasu and Ichiyamamoto, the yokozuna then gave local children an introductory session on butsukari (the pushing drill).
