The retirement ceremony for former Maegashira 6 Hidenoumi (Kise stable) took place on Saturday, October 3 at the Kokugikan, six months after his final bout in March 2026.

Nearly 300 guests took turns to cut his topknot, before his stablemaster, the former Higonoumi, cut the oichomage, marking the end of a 14-year career.

The day began with an exceptional dohyo-iri alongside his brother Tobizaru (Oitekaze stable) and his high-ranking stablemates: Churanoumi, Ura, Kinbozan and Kazuma. Together with Tobi' ‘the flying monkey’, they then faced off in an exhibition bout.

The event was also marked by the surprise appearance of the yokozuna Hoshoryu (Tatsunami stable), who was cheered on by the 1,000 spectators in attendance. Recovering from knee surgery, the champion made a notable appearance but did not speak to the press.

The only amusing hiccup was that Hidenoumi’s speech was delayed by a few minutes because he’d forgotten his shirt 🤣 – a problem quickly sorted out thanks to the help of his former partner Shiden, who has also recently retired.
