Fujinokawa: the new sekiwake’s preparation ahead of the Autumn tournament (Aki basho)

With just a few days to go until the Autumn tournament at the Ryogoku Kokugikan, the new sekiwake Fujinokawa (aged 21, Isenoumi stable) began his preparations during a group training session at Arashio-beya.
Facing wrestlers such as Wakamotoharu, the 177 cm and 125 kg young prodigy has distinguished himself through his agility and his right-handed technique, securing 9 victories out of 15 bouts. Determined, the youngest rikishi in the top division aims to consolidate his place amongst the san’yaku.
The day before, Fujinokawa returned to Saitama Sakae HS to celebrate this achievement with his former coach and his wife, who had helped him build muscle when he weighed just 70 kg at the start of his career.
This exceptional path is a source of pride for Kyoto Prefecture, which had not seen one of its own reach this level since Hiodoshi 198 years ago. His father, the former M12 Oikari (now Kabutoyama-oyakata), encourages him to maintain a challenger’s spirit and to practise a resolutely attacking style of sumo.
