Le saviez-vous ? Il s’est passé 31 ans entre les périodes Kansei et Bunsei (1789 > 1830) sans que l’on ait de yokozuna ! En effet, le cinquième Grand champion Onogawa a pris sa retraite en 1798 et le sixième (Onomatsu) a été promu seulement en 1828 !
Tout comme Tanikaze, Onogawa avait reçu sa licence en 1789 uniquement pour un dohyo-iri public mais personne n’envisageait de "couronner" quelqu’un d’autre après ONG. Ceci expliquerait pourquoi l’ozeki Raiden II n’a jamais été promu [NDLR, l’un des plus grands rikishi de l’Histoire 😉] bien qu’il fût meilleur que ses deux rivaux. L’Association reviendra sur sa décision en 1828 pour nommer Onomatsu et maintenir la tradition de la (future) corde blanche telle que nous la connaissons aujourd’hui.

Did you know? Thirty-one years passed between the Kansei and Bunsei eras (1789 > 1830) without any yokozuna! Indeed, the fifth Grand champion Onogawa retired in 1798 and the sixth (Onomatsu) was only promoted in 1828!
Like Tanikaze, Onogawa received his license in 1789 only for a public dohyo-iri, but no one considered "crowning" anyone else after ONG. This would explain why the ozeki Raiden II was never promoted [Editor's note, one of the greatest rikishi in History 😉] despite being better than his two rivals. The Association reversed its decision in 1828 to name Onomatsu and maintain the tradition of the (future) White rope as we know it today.
