Asanoyama and the winter tournament (kyushu basho): a triumphant return to the top?

Once again the top wrestler in the Takasago stable for the winter tournament, Asanoyama makes no secret of his aim: to quickly regain his ozeki status.
Back in training today (photo) at the temporary training ground in Fukuoka after a week’s break due to an ankle injury — which prevented him from training with Hoshoryu (see my other article) —, he is expected to join the inter-stable training sessions as early as tomorrow.
The challenge looks set to be particularly tough in the upcoming tournament, where he will mainly be facing wrestlers at the top of the rankings (san’yaku). Determined to win and achieve a positive record, Asanoyama is aiming high:
One or two kinboshi would be just the thing to lift my spirits; I haven’t managed to get one in seven years.
[Editor’s note: A kinboshi is a victory over a yokozuna. In this case, it was Kakuryu on the 5th day of the September 2019 tournament].
