Ryuho (Otowayama): a historic promotion and a new push towards the elite

Recently promoted to the sekitori ranks, Ryuho (aged 19, Otowayama stable) resumed training on Monday, October 5th.

For the occasion, the young wrestler wore for the first time the traditional white mawashi reserved for the elite. On the sound advice of his mentor, the former yokozuna Kakuryu, he acquired his kit immediately after his promotion to the Juryo division was made official, without waiting for the official rankings to be published. A highly symbolic milestone for the newly promoted wrestler:

It’s heavy. As soon as I bought it, I had it washed and my name embroidered on it. As everyone congratulated me, I realised I’d have to work even harder.

Ahead of the winter tournament, which begins on November 8 at the Fukuoka Kokusai Centre, Ryuho will take part in the autumn tour from Friday, October 16th. He will, exceptionally, be competing in a black mawashi at the event held in his home prefecture of Kyoto. For his debut in the top division, the young man is certainly ambitious but remains realistic about the physical challenge that awaits him over the 15 days of competition:

I’m aiming for more than ten wins. The opponents will be much tougher than before, so I need to be physically ready to go the distance.
His ring name (shikona) is a direct tribute to his roots. It is inspired by the phoenix associated with a temple in Uji (Kyoto Prefecture), located ten minutes from his parents’ home. Keen to maintain a connection with his home region, he had at one point considered incorporating the character for ‘crane’ (鶴 kaku) into his name. He ultimately decided against it to avoid any similarity with his elder, Kakuho — a decision with which he says he is now very satisfied.
