Réunie le 28 au Kokugikan pour sa séance ordinaire, la Commission consultative des yokozuna (YDC) s'est exprimée par la voix de son président, Tadamori Oshima, lors d'une conférence de presse. Ce dernier a abordé les situations respectives de deux grands champions.

1. Le cas Hoshoryu

Absent lors des trois derniers tournois en raison d'une blessure au genou droit, il accumule un cinquième forfait sur ses dix tournois disputés en tant que Grand champion. C'est toutefois la première fois depuis ses débuts professionnels en janvier 2018 qu'il abandonne dès l'ouverture de la compétition. Blessé lors du tournoi de Nagoya qu'il a dû quitter au quatorzième jour, Hoshoryu a subi une intervention chirurgicale à Tokyo le 29 juillet. Son maître d’écurie Tatsunami a indiqué que le lutteur avait traversé une période difficile, marquée par une perte d'appétit et des insomnies, mais qu'il a désormais repris l'entraînement.

Tout en concédant ne pas disposer de tous les détails médicaux sur cette blessure, le président Oshima a rappelé les attentes entourant le champion :

Afin d'assumer son rang, j'espère sincèrement qu'il se soignera, s'entraînera d'arrache-pied et reviendra en forme pour se battre à nouveau pour le titre.

2. Onosato "le Grand"

Le président a également félicité le vainqueur du tournoi d'automne achevé hier. Il s'agit de son premier titre depuis un an et du sixième de sa carrière. Freiné par une blessure à l'épaule gauche ces derniers mois, Onosato a confié avoir surmonté les épreuves à force de travail pour assumer pleinement son statut. Saluant cette victoire, la Commission a encouragé le champion à viser l'excellence :

Nous espérons qu'il poursuivra ses efforts pour devenir un yokozuna d'exception, alliant dignité et puissance.

Depuis le tournoi de Kyushu l'an passé, Onosato affiche une régularité impressionnante avec un bilan de 12 victoires pour 3 défaites sur six compétitions d'affilée. La YDC l'invite désormais à franchir un cap supplémentaire en visant un tournoi parfait, conclu sans la moindre défaite.

Meeting on September 28th at the Kokugikan for their regular session, the Yokozuna Deliberation Commission (YDC) spoke through the president, Tadamori Oshima, at a press conference. The latter addressed the respective situations of two great champions.

1. The Hoshoryu case

Absent from the last three tournaments due to a right knee injury, he has accumulated a fifth withdrawal in his ten tournaments played as Grand Champion. However, it is the first time since his professional debut in January 2018 that he has withdrawn from the opening of the competition. Hoshoryu was injured during the Nagoya tournament and had to quit from the fourteenth day and underwent surgery in Tokyo on July 29. His stablemaster Tatsunami said that the wrestler had gone through a difficult period, marked by a loss of appetite and insomnia, but that he has now resumed training.

Since the Kyushu tournament last year, Onosato has shown impressive consistency with a record of 12 wins and 3 losses in six competitions in a row. The YDC now invites him to take another step forward by aiming for a perfect tournament, concluded without a single defeat.
