Archives: a look back at the 1985 Kyushu tournament (Day 1)
En août, la DeLorean nous ramène en novembre 1985 pour le tournoi de Kyushu. Deux mois après le treizième titre de Chiyonofuji, cette quinzaine s'ouvre sous le signe des adieux, marqués par la retraite de deux figures du sumo : Kotokaze et Washuyama.
Pour lancer la vidéo de cette première journée forte de vingt combats, voici un aperçu des affrontements à ne pas manquer :
15:24 Jingaku x Konishiki. Vaincre le "Meat bomb" Konishiki n'était jamais une mince affaire vu son gabarit hors norme... Jingaku réussit un coup tactique parfait avec un hikiotoshi (traction vers le bas) au moment où Konishiki charge, utilisant l'élan du colosse contre lui.
18:12 Fujinokawa x Terao. Un duel particulièrement intense et spectaculaire entre deux lutteurs ultra-dynamiques et réputés pour leur style de combat explosif axé sur les poussées répétées. Fujinokawa parvient à esquiver l'assaut de son jeune adversaire pour l'adjuger sur un pivotement de côté (tsukiotoshi).
25:37 Onokuni x Hoshi. Un duel au sommet entre deux futurs Grands champions. Onokuni s'impose en puissance contre le futur Hokutoumi. Un choc physique impressionnant entre deux piliers du sumo des années 80.
27:07 Asahifuji x Takanosato. Une victoire marquante d’Asahifuji (qui était encore komusubi) contre le yokozuna. Ce match symbolise le passage de témoin entre deux légendes. En effet, Takanosato disputait là son tout dernier tournoi.
28:45 Chiyonofuji x Kotogaume. La démonstration de force du patron de l'époque. Chiyonofuji, au sommet de son art, contrôle l'espoir Kotogaume (futur sekiwake) et conclut avec l'une de ses prises de finition emblématiques : la projection par le bras extérieur (uwatenage).
À la fin de la quinzaine, le Loup décrochait son quatorzième trophée !

In August, the DeLorean takes us back to November 1985 for the Kyushu tournament. Two months after Chiyonofuji’s thirteenth title, this fortnight’s tournament began on a farewell note, marked by the retirement of two sumo legends: Kotokaze and Washuyama.
To kick off the video coverage of this first day, featuring twenty bouts, here’s a preview of the matches you won’t want to miss:
15:24 Jingaku x Konishiki. Overcoming the "Meat bomb" Konishiki was never an easy opponent, given his extraordinary size... Jingaku pulled off a perfect tactical move with a hikiotoshi (pulling downwards) just as Konishiki charges, using the giant’s momentum against him.
18:12 Fujinokawa x Terao. A particularly intense and spectacular bout between two highly dynamic wrestlers, renowned for their explosive fighting style centred on repeated thrusts. Fujinokawa managed to dodge his young opponent’s attack and won the bout with a sideways pivot (tsukiotoshi).
25:37 Onokuni x Hoshi. A clash at the top between two future Grand Champions. Onokuni prevailed with sheer power against the future Hokutoumi. An impressive physical battle between two pillars of 1980s sumo.
27:07 Asahifuji x Takanosato. A memorable victory for Asahifuji (who was still a komusubi) over the yokozuna. This bout symbolised the passing of the torch between two legends. Indeed, Takanosato was competing in his very last tournament.
28:45 Chiyonofuji x Kotogaume. A show of strength by the champion of the time. Chiyonofuji, at the peak of his powers, dominated the up-and-coming Kotogaume (future sekiwake) and finished with one of his signature moves: the outer-arm throw (uwatenage).
At the end of the fortnight, the Wolf clinched his fourteenth trophy!
