Il y a 67 ans le 3 février 1958, l’Association sacrait son 45e yokozuna, Wakanohana. Il a honoré ce titre pendant quatre ans seulement, mais sa rivalité avec Tochinishiki (le 44e) reste l’une des plus mémorables : 35 rencontres, dont 12 duels lorsqu’ils étaient tous les deux au sommet (1958-1960, WNH en a remporté huit).
À sa retraite en 1962, il fonde le club Futagoyama avant d’être élu en 1988 à la tête de l’Association. Il fera son kanreki dohyo-iri cette année-là au Kokugikan. Il prend sa "deuxième retraite" en 1993, le club sera absorbé par son frère Fujishima-oyakata et Wakanohana prendra la présidence du Musée.

67 years ago on February 3, 1958, the Association crowned its 45th yokozuna, Wakanohana. He only held the title for four years, but his rivalry with Tochinishiki (the 44th) remains one of the most memorable: 35 meetings, including 12 duels when they were both at the top (1958-1960, WNH won eight).
Upon his retirement in 1962, he founded the Futagoyama stable before being elected in 1988 as President of the Association. He made his kanreki dohyo-iri that year at the Kokugikan. He definitely retired in 1993, the stable was then absorbed by his brother Fujishima-oyakata and Wakanohana took over the presi-dency of the Museum.
