En novembre 1973, alors qu’il menait sur le score parfait de 12-0, le 54e yokozuna Wajima encaisse sa première défaite de la quinzaine contre le n° 52 Kitanofuji. Le lendemain, il doit déclarer forfait à cause d’une blessure à la main. Le soir de la finale, ses premiers poursuivants Kotozakura I et Kurohimeyama étant à 11-4, l’Association décide d’accorder au Grand champion son quatrième trophée alors qu’il n’est plus là !

Cet événement rare se produira une seule autre fois, en mars 1989, alors que Chiyonofuji (14-1) avait abandonné à cause d’une épaule déboîtée.

Wajima, or the incredible story of an absent champion!

In November 1973, while leading by a perfect score of 12-0, the 54th yokozuna Wajima suffered his first defeat of the fortnight against the No. 52 Kitanofuji. The next day, he had to withdraw because of a hand injury. On the evening of the final, his first pursuers Kotozakura I and Kurohimeyama were at 11-4, so the Association decided to grant the Grand Champion his fourth trophy even though he was no longer there!

This rare event would happen only one other time, in March 1989, when Chiyonofuji (14-1) retired because of a dislocated shoulder.
