Contexte : En juillet 1989 à Nagoya s’est tenu le tout premier match de play-off entre deux yokozuna du même club.

Qui étaient-ce ?

• Wakanohana II vs Takanosato (Futagoyama-beya)
• Chiyonofuji vs Hokutoumi (Kokonoe-beya)
• Takanohana II vs Wakanohana III (Futagoyama)

La bonne réponse est… Chiyonofuji/Hokutoumi ! A Nagoya’ 89, les deux hommes étaient à égalité (12-3). Une manche décisive les a alors départagés. Vous pouvez revoir ce moment sur ce lien.

NB : Wakanohana II (1978-1983) et Takanosato (1983-1986) n’ont jamais été Grands champions à la même période, huit mois séparent la retraite de l’un et la promotion de l’autre. Concernant les deux frères Hanada, Takanohana (1994-2003) et Wakanohana III (1998-2000) se sont rencontrés en 1995, l’un portait déjà la corde blanche alors que l’autre était encore ozeki.

The correct answer is... Chiyonofuji/Hokutoumi. In Nagoya' 89, the two men were tied (12-3). A decisive match then separated them. You can watch this moment again on this link.

NB: Wakanohana II (1978-83) and Takanosato (1983-86) have never been Grand Champions at the same time, eight months separate the retirement of one and the promotion of the other. Regarding the two Hanada brothers, Takanohana (1994-2003) and Wakanohana III (1998-2000) met in 1995, one already wearing the white rope while the other was still ozeki.
