On Friday 4 September, the Yokozuna Deliberation Committee (YDC) training session at the Kokugikan provided an insight into the top wrestlers’ form ahead of the autumn tournament.

After a poor start against Kirishima, the yokozuna Onosato finished on a positive note (photo, 6–5). The Association’s president expressed his satisfaction but felt the champion’s performance could be improved, particularly with regard to the height of his hips. Having undergone knee surgery at the end of July, Hoshoryu made a surprise appearance on the advice of his coach, Tatsunami-oyakata. Limited to pushing exercises (butsukari), his participation in the upcoming fortnight remains uncertain and he is refusing to rush his return.

For his part, Atamifuji impressed the dignitaries with his aggressive style, despite a modest score (1-4). The sekiwake is aiming for promotion to the rank of ozeki, with a a target of 12 wins to reach the threshold of 33 successes required. Finally, Aonishiki, who won in Nagoya in July, partially sat out the event due to discomfort in his left ankle. He nevertheless hopes to make a full return next week to challenge for another title.
