Premier acte : les jours 1 à 5

La première chose à noter est l’absence totale du yokozuna Onosato et de l’ozeki Aonishiki, qui étaient tous les deux blessés à l’épaule ou au pied.
L’autre Grand Champion, Hoshoryu, était de ce fait l’un des gros favoris mais il a rapidement quitté le concours à cause de violentes douleurs dans la cuisse.
On se croyait tranquille sur le plan des abandons mais le "massacre" a repris au cinquième jour quand Takayasu annonce lui aussi son forfait 😫.
La san’yaku - c.-à-d. les plus gradés - s’est donc retrouvée à 6 puis 5 hommes sur 9… L'ozeki Kirishima était le plus performant dans cette partie en sortant à 5-0 contrairement à son collègue Kotozakura (2-3).

The first thing to note is the complete absence of the yokozuna Onosato and the ozeki Aonishiki, who were both injured in the shoulder or foot.
The other Grand Champion, Hoshoryu, was one of the big favorites but he quickly left the competition because of violent pains in his thigh.
We thought we were safe in terms of withdrawals, but the "slaughter" resumed on the fifth day when Takayasu also announced his withdrawal 😫.
The san'yaku - i.e. the highest ranked - therefore found themselves with 6 then 5 men upon 9... The ozeki Kirishima was the best performer in this part by going out at 5-0 unlike his colleague Kotozakura (2-3).

Dans cette étape, on a vu l’ascension de Yoshinofuji, qui domine à 5-0 ses adversaires.
Le sort s’acharne encore sur les lutteurs, cette fois c’est Asakoryu (3-4) qui "jette l’éponge" à la suite d’un genou défaillant !
Au neuvième soir, Kirishima finit presque KO après sa bataille. Même s’il parvient à combattre, il semblera sonné pendant le reste de la compétition…
En deuxième division, si Kazekeno et Enho constituaient l’échappée dans le premier tiers du tournoi, la situation a tourné en faveur de Kazuma !

In this phase, we saw the rise of Yoshinofuji, who dominated his opponents at 5-0.

Dans la troisième période, le mauvais œil frappe toujours les combattants : Asanoyama (7-5) et Kotozakura (3-9) se plaignent également du dos ou du pied !
Seul Takerufuji en ligue Juryo arrive à réaliser le "sans faute" de 5-0…
La coupe de l’Empereur s’est véritablement disputée à partir de mercredi 20 - onzième jour - quand Kotoeiho, Tobizaru puis Wakatakakage venaient défier Kirishima dans la tête de course.
Pour finir, il a fallu que Kiri’ et Waka’ se départagent dans une mache décisive !

In the third period, the evil eye still hit the fighters: Asanoyama (7-5) and Kotozakura (3-9) also complain about their back or feet!

The Emperor's Cup was really contested from Wednesday 20 - eleventh day - when Kotoeiho, Tobizaru and Wakatakakage came to challenge Kirishima in the lead of the race.
In the end, Kiri' and Waka' had to separate themselves in a decisive match!

Chaque soir après les combats, les spectateurs et les souscripteurs de l’application GRAND SUMO pouvaient voter pour les sekitori qui ont le mieux combattu selon eux.
Si Isegahama-beya monte sur la première place des clubs avec 16 voix réparties entre cinq membres, on remarque que le champion Wakatakakage (Arashio) et ses 10 points ont conquis le plus de cœurs en mai !

Every night after the fights, spectators and subscribers to the GRAND SUMO application could vote for the sekitori who fought the best in their opinion.
If Isegahama-beya claim the first place of the stables with 16 votes shared between five members, we notice that the champion Wakatakakage and his 10 points won the most hearts in May!

The biggest feuds
En Makuuchi, Mitakeumi et Tamawashi remportent haut la main la "palme d’or" des duels avec 39 rencontres. Leur rivalité a commencé en novembre 2015, avec une très forte domination par 30-9 de la part de Mitakeumi aujourd’hui !
Ils sont suivis de près par Sadanoumi et Nishikigi qui combattaient en Juryo. Dimanche 24, ces deux-là se faisaient face pour la trentième fois depuis mars 2012 avec une égalité parfaite !

In Makuuchi, Mitakeumi and Tamawashi won the "golden palm" of duels with 39 bouts. Their rivalry began in November 2015, with Mitakeumi dominating today by 30-9!

Lors de la réunion du lundi 25, le comité YDC a fait part de son mécontentement à la JSA quant au nombre élevé des absences (7 dont 5/9 haut-gradés). Il a été demandé de prendre la situation plus au sérieux afin que l’on évite l’accroissement parallèle des retraites. Certains membres sont également inquiets concernant la popularité du sport si le haut-niveau n’assure pas pleinement son rôle...

Une seule personne a été désignée pour la promotion Juryo avant le tournoi de juillet malgré les attentes de voir d’autres montées : Arashifuji, d'Isegahama-beya.

L’affaire du club Miyagino, qui a démarré en février 2024 par la méconduite et le renvoi d'un membre, a réellement pris fin jeudi 28 lorsque le Bureau a officialisé la cessation de la mise sous tutelle des membres transférés : ils appartiennent désormais légalement à Isegahama.
Le prochain rendez-vous sumo sera l'exhibition de Paris le weekend du 13-14 juin. Furansumo sera présent, je tâcherai de prendre le plus de photos/vidéos possible afin de vous faire vivre l'événement comme pour Londres en octobre 2025, mais cette fois ce sera véritablement de près !

At the meeting on Monday 25, the YDC committee expressed its frustration with the JSA about the high number of absences (7 including 5/9 highest ranked). It was asked to take the situation more seriously so that a parallel increase in retirements could be avoided. Some members are also worried about the popularity of the sport if the high-level does not fully fulfil their role...

Only one person has been designated for the Juryo promotion ahead of the July tournament despite expectations of seeing more: Arashifuji, from Isegahama-beya.

The Miyagino stable case, which began in February 2024 with a member's misconduct and sack, really ended on Thursday 28 when the Board of directors formalized the end of the transferred members’ custody: they now legally belong to Isegahama.
The next sumo event will be the Paris exhibition on the weekend of June 13-14. Furansumo will be present, I will try to take as many photos/videos as possible in order to make you experience the event like London in October 2025, but this time it will be much closer!
