L’Association nous propose mardi 30-9 un quiz concernant Itsutsushima, un rikishi de Dewanoumi-beya.

Débutant en 1931, il gravit les échelons non pas par ses résultats médiocres (171-113-20), mais son implication dans les entraînements ce qui lui vaut le surnom de "keiko yokozuna" 稽古横綱. Promu ozekien janvier 1942 (système à deux basho/an), il déclarera forfait au 10^e jour à cause d’une blessure au genou. Avec un make-koshi 7-8 en mai, il est rétrogradé en sekiwake.

Cette aventure lui procure ainsi le record de la plus courte promotion de l’histoire du sumo. Démotivé, il prend sa retraite en juin 1942 et quitte l’Association. Il travaille alors dans une poissonnerie en Nagasaki et à Tokyo jusqu’à sa mort en 1973.

On Tuesday 9-30, the Association gave us a quiz about Itsutsushima, a rikishi from Dewanoumi-beya.

Starting in 1931, he climbed the ranks not thanks to his mediocre results (171-113-20), but his involvement in training, which earned him the nickname "keiko yokozuna" 稽古横綱. Promoted to ozeki in January 1942 (two-basho/year system), he withdrew on the 10^th day due to a knee injury. With a 7-8 make-koshi in May, he was demoted to sekiwake.

This story granted him the record for the shortest promotion in the history of sumo. Demotivated, he retired in June 1942 and left the Association. He then worked in a fishmonger in Nagasaki and Tokyo until his death in 1973.
