On fête aujourd'hui un anniversaire un peu spécial.
En effet il y a exactement 100 ans le 29-4-1925, le prince régent Hirohito assistait à une représentation de sumo donnée par la fédération de Tokyo et leur a versé une certaine somme d'argent. Quelques mois plus tard, le montant servira à créer une coupe remise au vainqueur des tournois Makuuchi. Le premier détenteur sera le 31e yokozuna Tsunenohana en janvier 1926 (NDLR, son troisième championnat).
Un an plus tard, l'Association d'Osaka sera absorbée par celle de Tokyo, on assiste à la naissance de la Nihon Sumo Kyokai dont les deux premiers présidents seront des haut-gradés militaires entre 1928 et 1944. Le trophée sera rebaptisé "coupe de l'Empereur" lorsqu'Hirohito monte sur le trône sous le nom d'Empereur Showa.

We celebrate today a very special anniversary.
Indeed exactly 100 years ago on 1925-4-29, Prince regent Hirohito attended a sumo performance from Tokyo's federation and offered a certain amount of money. A few months later, the currency was used to create a cup delivered to the winner of the Makuuchi tournaments. The first holder will be the 31st yokozuna Tsunenohana in January 1926 (Editor's note, his third championship).
One year later, the Osaka association will merge with the Tokyo one, it's the birth of the Nishon Sumo Kyokai whose first two Presidents were military high-ranked officers from 1928 to 1944. The trophy will be renamed "Emperor's cup" when Hirohito is crowned Emperor Showa.
