La tête de course à la coupe de l’Empereur commence à se détacher dès lundi matin. En effet, ils ne sont déjà que treize hommes invaincus dont les deux yokozuna et les deux ozeki.
Seul représentant d’Isegahama-beya en Juryo, Takerufuji écarte Kotokuzan après la frayeur de Nishinoryu contre Tamashoho.
En Makuuchi, Asanoyama marque son retour chez les "grands" en repoussant Hatsuyama au pied du dohyo. Le vétéran Tamawashi (41 ans !) démontre une nouvelle fois sa présence en sortant Atamifuji.
On remonte le banzuke pour arriver à la san’yaku. Wakatakakage fait rouler Takayasu au sol pour creuser un peu plus l’écart dans leur rivalité (12-6). Pour finir, Aonishiki bénéficiera d’un mono’ii pour vaincre Yoshinofuji.
